SYDNEY, 7th May.
The Full Court, sitting at Sydney, upheld the appeal of the British Medical Association against the verdict awarding Dr. Thompson £2000 for alleged defamation, and expelling him from the association, and entered a verdict for the defendant association.
Dr. Thompson some time ago took a prominent part in an agitation for the release of a woman from a mental asylum. On the ground that he had been guilty of unprofessional conduct, the B.M.A. expelled him. He claimed £5000 for defamation, and was awarded £2000. On the first count, his expulsion from the association, he was awarded £250; on the second, of inducing other doctors not to consult with or professionally recognise him, £750; on the other three counts involving the publishing of alleged false and malicious statements regarding plaintiff, £350 on each of two, and £300 on the third.
