The Austrian branch of the Rothschild family, which is Baxd to have become nationalised in Czecho-Slovakia, was founded towards tho end of the eighteenth century by Solomon, second son of the patriarchal Maier Amsohel. Solomon, who was made a baron soon after his settlament in Vienna, was reputed to enjoy an exceptional share of the Rothschild luck, for he never made an unsuccessful speculation, and superstition averred that he had "th-e golden touch" Amons tie Jewesses of Vienna it was firmly believed that everything hss touched with his hand became lucky, and on one occasion a widow brought to him three lottery bonds in whioh she had invested her daughter's •fowry, with the request feat lie should touch them and to ensure that they would win a prize. The baron touebnd the bonds, and, sure enough, they secured prizes.
