TRAINS CEASE RUNNING
NOT LIKELY TO RESUME TILL END
OF WEEK.
CHRISTCHURCH, 7th May.
The country round Rangiora is a veritable sheet of water. Old residents describe the flood as the worst for twenty years. The south-west side of Rangiora suffered considerably, water washing down John street like a river. The houses were soon surrounded, and in many cases it was impossible to get in or out of them. Fortunately the rain eased this afternoon, and the water began to subside, averting a great amount of damage.
The Selwyn River, running in high flood, has caused damage in the Ellersmere district.
For the first time for many years the church bells were not rung at Akaroa last niglit and no services were held, for at the church-going hour the wind was blowing a .gala and the rain was pouring down 'in driving sheets. All the creeks on Banks Peninsula are flooded.
No trains are running north of Kaiapoi. No trains are likely to get through to Arthur's Pass before the end of the week, but trains will be able to run to and from Springfield. The Southbridge line is also interrupted.
It is a till raining throughout Canterbury to-night, but the fall is light compared with the previous 24 hours.
