GISBORNE, 6th May.
At the inquest upon Ernest George Cass, whose body was found in the Tarurehu River, the verdict was that deceased was accidentally drowned through being knocked off a lighter by willow trees.
The evidence showed TOat three lighters drawn by a launch were returning to' Nelson Bros.' works after loading meat on the Hner Waipara, when Cass, who was on the first, was knocked overboard by overhanging willows. A man > on the second lighter saw Cass in the water and threw him a lifebuoy, hut the second lighter went over Cass. The launch wks 120 feet ahead of th* first lighter, and those aboard it coul<i not hear the calls an 3 did not kno\y of the occurrence till the works, which ;were half a mile away, Were reached. Then the launch returned, only to find Cass's body being removed from the river;i ' "
