BERHAMPORE v. HUTT.

The Hutt seniors performed-very creditably against Berhampore, the conditions suiting their play, and they gave the Light Blues some very anxious moments. Hutt kicked off and play ( hovered in midfield for about ten minutes, after which the Berhampore backs commenced to move, but good tackling by Hutt kept them from scoring. The first try came after twenty-five minutes' play. Charles cross-kicked, and Friend, following up fast, outpaced an opponent and fell on the ball. Pope failed with the kick. The Blues' next try was the outcome of a splendid passing rush. Tho ball travelled from Charles, to Lang, to Matheson, to Howard, to Hickling. _ The speedy winger never left a try in doubt, scoring easily. Lang's kick missed. Immediately after the kick-out Hufct attacked, and a fine passing rush by ' their backs ended up ! in Macdougall racing around behind the posts to score a good try. Tetley failed with an easy kick. Lang and Pope essayed goals from penalty kicks, but both were unsuccessful. Play continued of an. even character till Hickling gathered up the ball, and, running up the tonchline, passed to Howard, who scored beliind the posts. Watson goaled, and half-time i sounded shortly after, with the score: Berhampore 11, Hutt 3. When the ball was kicked off for the second: spell rain was falling, and, this greatly hampered the Blue backs in their handling of the ball. The wet conditions suited Hutt, and they attacked repeatedly, giving Berhampore some very anxious moments in defending their line. Berhampore's next try came from a passing rush, enabling Howard to run over unopposed, but he slipped when trying to ground the ball, and a Hutt player, thinking it was a try, let the ball lie. Hickling came along and forced the ball, and was awarded the try. Watson missed the goal. Hutt still continued to attack, and lost opportunities through faulty handling. Berhampore relieved the pressure, and Matheson picked the ball up and passed to Howard, who ran from half-way right to the goal-line, when he was tackled, but Friend was handy and Bcor L ed. Pope failed to convert. The whistle sounded for time shortly afterwards, with play in midfield. ■ Mr. G. Bradley controlled the game.
