EASTBOURNE

CANDIDATES FOR MAYORALTY

AND COUNCIL,

A large deputation of Eastbourne residents waited on the Mayor (Mr. F. H. Mather) last evening with a request that he should allow himself to be again nominated 1 for the office. The deputation, which was introduced by Councillor C A. Marquis, was representative of the East Harbour 'Borough, and included a number of persons interested in the business and athletic life of the district. After listening to the requests made by soveral speakers, led by Mr. H. Jones, the Mayor said that he had intended not to again contest the office, but in view of the Efpparently extensive desire that he should do so he would leconsider this decision, and would give tho deputation a reply in the course of the next two days. Should Mr. Mather decide to again stand for the Mayoralty of Eastbourne, there is likely to be a contest, as it is stated that Mr. William Thomae Wood is also a candidate. Mr. Wood was member of Parliament, for Palmerston North from 1902 to 1908, and also occupied the Mayoral chair of that town for some years. He ha 3 now retired from active business, and has been resident in Eastbourne for several, years. Seats on the borough council are also likely to be keenly contested. Only four of the sitting councillors are standing again, these being Councillors H. Shortt, C. Hartridge, C. A. Marquis, and T. W. Pilcher. Others who have signified their' intention of coming; out are:— Messrs. E. A. Dawson, H. Jones, O. Hull-Brown, H. Downes, and S. Fisher, while several other names are also mentioned.
