AMALGAMATION

PETONE AND LOWER HUTT.

The following report' of a joint committee set up to consider the question of the, amalgamation of the boroughs of Lower ,-Hutt and Petone was last evening adopted by the respective councils:— "Committees of representatives from the Petone and Lower Hutt Boroughs met at Petone on Thursday, sth April, there being present: From Lower Hutt— His Worship the Mayor (Mr. T. Strand), Councillors A. J. Hobhs, W. N. Dempsey, J. Mitchell, and J. V. Eames (town clerk); from Petone —His Worship the Mayor (Mr. J. M'Ewan), and Councillors Hay, Brocklebank and Anderson, and W. F. Sturman (town clerk). "Mr. Strand explained that his committee, was not authorised by it? council to consider the question of amalgamation with Wellington City. "A free and informal discussion then took place, when the following resolution proposed by Councillor Dempsey and seconded by Councillor Anderson was carried: " 'That in the opinion of this meeting the best interests of the Hutt Valley would be best served by tho union of the Lower Hutt and Petone Boroughs.'

"Mr. Strand and Councillor Mitchell and Councillor Hay voted against this resolution, and expressed the opinion that they desired to go more fully into the _ question of unconditional amala.gamation before definitely stating they were in favour of the proposal. ■'Mr. Strand then moved : 'That in the opinion of this meeting tho time has arrived when the question of the amalgamation should be seriously considered, and that it recommends the incoming councils to consider same.' This was seconded by Councillor Mitchell and carlied unanimously."
