DEATH OF A BRIDGE BUILDER.

DANNEVIRKE, 16th April.

An inquest was held to-day in connection with the death of John Bell, who was killed at the Mangatawaiiti Bridge on Friday. v The evidence showed that deceased was' stripping the casing off a green concrete pier, when the pier collapsed, deceased being buried under the concrete in the space between the casing holding the bank and that holding the pier. The pier had only been put into position on the day prior to the accident. The opinion oi witnesses was that an earthquake the same evening damaged it to auch an extent as to cause it to collapse. The Coroner returned a verdict that death was caused through fracture of the akull.
