WALKING ACROSS AFRICA
SOME THRILLS AND ADVENTURES.
(UNITED PRESS ASSOCIATION.—COFIIUMT.) (AUSTRALIAN - NEW ZEALAND CABLE ASSOCIATION.) LONDON, 14th April. A story of thrills and adventures is related by Captain Murphy, late of the Doraets, who has arrived in London after a two-years' walk of three thousand miles across Africa. He left Beira in March, 1921, with ■ £5, and arrived in England with £50, the re-mains-of his earnings on the journey.
He met many lions face to face, and concluded that" they are terrible cowards unless 'starving or injured. One village was particularly terrorised by a man-eating lioness, which carried off natives. One woman was making porridge, and when the lioness appeared she threw the boiling contents in its face, causing it to flee. Captain Murphy shot the lioness later, as she was blinded by the hot porridge. He slept in native villages, where he was ""treated moßt cordially. He found English and French sufficient to overcome the language, difficulty. v ■ * ■
