[Herd won the open championship in 1902, was second in 1892, 1895, 1910, and 1920, third in 1911, and fourth in 1903 and 1908. He won the " News of the World " competition in 1906, and represented Scotland against England on nine occasions between 1903 and 1913. Amongst his trophies are numerous tournaments. His best performance was in a- 36-hole final at Dollymount, Ireland', when he beat Harry Vardon on the last green by 1, after being 6 down in the first 18 holes.
