PORT NICHOLSON SILVER BAND.

The popularity of the Port Nicholson Silver Band is assured. The second recital of the season was given before a crowded house last night, and proved just as. enjoyable as that of the opening night. The band, under Mr. J. J. Drew, introduced the programme with the hymn "Fierce Raged the Tempest," and the overture "Beautiful Galatea," whioh is quite an ambitious selection, by Suppe. The arrangement by Ord Hume of gems from Sullivan's operas is a very tuneful series of favourites, and greatly pleased the large audience last night. The march "Wellington" (Zehle) completed the band numbers. Instrumental relief in solo work was that by Bandsman T._ Ovens, who is an expert on the euphonium, and who played Wagner's "Star of Eve" in finished style./ Very fine was the trombone playing of Sergeant J. Glennie, who had to repeat his "Parachute" numbers, so well did the »udiance like his work. Little Zelma Carroll was in good form, and submitted several items, grave. ai)d gay, including "An Old..Romance,-'' "Peach Pie," and "Old Chap." Mr. E. M. Hyman's violin solos were a feature of the recital. He showed a nice delicacy and accuracy, and a «ensitive touch in an excerpt from "Samson, et Delilah," by Saint Saens. and again in "Moto Perpetuoso," and also pleased with two lighter numbers which were catchy and bright. Mrs. R, Wildish, a visiting singer from, Gisborne, greatly pleased with her interpretation of Sanderson's "Harbour Night Song," and, as a recall, "Waiata Poi." Mr. Ernest Jones (baritone) submitted the prologue from "Pagliacci," and sang with a due regard for Leoncavello's lines, dramatic and full of melody. He also won encomiums for his singing of the simpler "Until" Altogether, the recital, ably assisted by Mr. Frank Crowther (tit the piano), was an undoubted iUCCM*.
