MARISt DEFEAT, ATHLETIC.

Quite good football was to bs seen in the Marist-Athletic match .at the Athletic Park, which was won by Marist by 5 points to nil. Both teams were evenly matched, and the backs kept moving practically all through.^ Athletic had hard, luck in not scoring, ifor some of their efforts were very fine, but-Marist certainly deserved their win, their afternoon's display being of a most promising nature. Marist had a new wing-threequarter in action, O'Callaghan, from the West Coast, and in him the club has a great acquisition. Ho has weight, and plenty of speed with it, too, and he put his fleet qualities to good effect by scoring behind the posts after Lauder had created an opening. His cutting-in was executed in good style, and, altogether, he made a very favourable impression. , The teams were:— Marist.— Griffin; Carmody, Mahoney, O'Callaghan ; Murphy, Markham; Brunsell; Connop; Crotty, Boyce, Hopkins, Sullivan, Troy, Lander, Hayden. Athletic—Brook; Malmanche, B. Gibsoii, Bullard; Svenson, Porter; Hall; Austed; Osborne, Swain; M'Naught, W. Ryan, M'Cawley, Guy, Bognuda. Athletic kicked off with the sun behind them, and Marist were called, upon to defend. Marist backs then got possession and commenced to throw the ball about, anod there was some fast work round about half-way. Griffin received in the Marist twenty-five, and mado a, good, fast run down the northern side line, and when at .about half-way he centred. The field was fairly scattered, and Lander saw the chance, picked up, and an exciting passing rush followed between Lander, Mahoney, Markham, and O'Callaghan, who received from Markham near the corner, beat Brook, and scored behind the posts. Murphy converted. Marist 5, Athletic 0. The ensuing play was interesting in many respects, both sides doing a liberal share of attacking, and both having some close calls. Troy did excellent service in defence, and saved a most dangerous situation at one stage by a timely kick to touch. Before the spell ended Athletic essayed to bring off some passing bouts, but they did not get sufficient opportunity to get going. Just before half-time, Mahoney and O'Callaghan i broke away from mitlfield together, and. the last-named was almost in when he was grassed. Tho second spell was legs interesting than the first, and there was a change

in the Marist composition. Griffin did not come on again owing to an injury, and his place was taken by O'Callaghan, Creed going on to the wing. Athletic forwards combined well, and a concerted attack was negatived by O'Callaghan. The Blues came at the aggressive again, and Gibson and Bullard carried the ball to the Marist line, where Bullard was held up. Marist were kept defending hard for some time, but at length thei forwards got the upper hand and the venue was changed to Athletic end. Murphy made rather a poor attempt with a free-kick, but a few minutes afterwards he stemmed the onset of an Athletic rush and punted upfield. Not long elapsed before Athletic backs were again in motion, and they had very hard luck, as Bullard was smartly thrown out by O'Callaghan just as he was about to cross the line. The Blues never failed to try to take advantage of any openings as they arose, but "they found the Mariat defence impenetrable, and the game closed without any further score. Mr. Wilkinson was referee. ,
