In condensing the remarks of Mr. L. Glover at the Labour candidates' meeting at Newtown on Thursday night, his meaning was not made quite clear in respect to the cost 'of unloading coal at the wharf. Mr. Glover stated that in the discharge of coal from a ship nine men were employed, each roceiving 2s 4d per hour, making the total labour cost in the discharge of twelve hours £1 Is. On the other hand, when the Harbour Board's grabs were used, these were operated by two men—a crane-driver and a hatchman —whose wages were 2s 4d per hour each, or a total of 4s Bd. The grabs discharged twenty tons of coal per hour, at a cost of a little under 3d per ton, whereas when nine men were working und«r the ordinary method' tho cost per ton waa Is Od. Mr. Glover contended that the difference between
the 3d and the Is 9d should be retained in the pockets of the consumers. Nominations for the Mayoralty and seats on local bodios close at noon on Monday.
