MR. BALDWIN'S BUDGET
CHEAPER BEER AND BETTING TAX.
(Received 14th April, noon.)
LONDON, 13th April. The "Daily Express" Parliamentary reporter states that Mr. Baldwin, Chancellor of the Exchequer, is planning to reduce the price of beer by Id a pint. This means £14.000,000 from the Exchequer, and £8,000,000 will be provided by the brewers reducing their profits. The income tax will bo definitely reduced—to what extent depends on whether the Cabinet, approves the Chancellor's proposed betting tax. In reference to the tax,. Bishop Welldon said:' "Beating is not necessarily sinful. ' At the best it is a gratification of a personal taste. I can see no reason why tho' State should not tax it, as it does liquor. If the tax is to enrich the Exchequer to the exfent of £10,000,000 or £20.000,000, and at the same, time to confine betting to narrower limits and raise the character of the betting ring, it would be a most desirable policy."
