NEW CHAMPION MERMAID
Miss Ella Smith, of Sydney, won the 440 yards championship of New South Wales by defeating Misses Lily Robertson and Enid Charlton, considered to be,, naxt.to Mina Wylie, the State's two best distance swimmers, says "Metroii," in the Sydney. "Sun." Miss Smith's' win came m the nature of a shock, and her time—6mir» 45 2-ssec—must be considered very good when, it is remembered that Miss Mina Wylie won the 440 yards Australian title last.season.in.Melbourne in 6min 50sec. , The best time ever recorded by Miss Mina Wylie for. the distance' is 6min 36aec, when she defeated Miss Fanny Durack in,.a test race last summer. Miss Ella Smith's time—9 3-ssec slower—was recorded without serious preparation, and she will certainly improve upon those figures. Next to Miss . Wylie, she ;is probably; the best all-round swimmer in Australia to-day,, for she is an ex-State champiop diver, was second to Miss. Wylie in the 50 yards State back-stroke-championship last season, and was narrowly beaten by Miss Ettie Robertson in thu 50 yards junior State championship. Possessing', everything necessary for a championship career, Miss Smith will certainly be' 'heard' from in tho future titlo races. . . s
