NOAH'S ARK
BIG COLLECTION FOR SYDNEY ZOO.
Noah's. Ark must have looked very much as the forward deck of the Medic did recently, states a writer in the Sydney "Sun." The deck was crowded with zebras, baboons,. eagles, and other I animals and birds from Africa. There were five beautiful zebras— magnificent specimens—baboons, monkeys, night apes, squirrels, eagles, vultures,' hornbills, finches, doves, guinea fowl, geese, and thrushes. The animals and birds were taken from the . boat . to. motor-lorries, and whisked off to Taronga Park, after - a brief inspection. " • \The zebras are on view, and are near ' the camel paddock. They are the first zebras to be shown at Taronga Park. ' The birds arid beasts have all come from Africa, and 1 the consignment was due in no small measure to the personal efforts of. General Smuts, who had readily, agreed, to help the Taronga Park Trust. In exchange, the Trust would send a shipment of kangaroos, wallabies, black swans, cockatoos, parrots, pigeons, and' finches. The Ehodesian baboons were sent as a gift to Taronga Park to make up for a present of wombats. The -five zebras around which most interest was centred were in splendid condition and remarkably quiet. They poked their noses through the bars, and seemed delighted to have their foreheads and and necks scratched. Their markings are even and distinct—the black rings running- right down their legs in 1 equal spacing. One of these ani-. mals is slightly larger than the other four. The new.. arrivals were:—s zebras, 1 pair Rhodesian'baboons, 1 pair Vervet monkeys, 1 pair of Angola night apeß, 4 pairs ground squirrels, 2 pairs bateleur eagles, 2 pairs tawny eagles, 1 pair white-backed vultures, 1 pair whiteheaded vultures, 2 pairs ground hornbills, 4 pairs hornbills (1 grey, 2 yellow bill, 1 red bill), 1 pair wood hoopoes, 1 pair lilac-breasted rollers, 2 pairs redeyed turtle, doves, 4 pairs Namaqua doves, 4 pairs speckled rock pigeons, 4 pairs red-necked francolinG, 2 pairs East African guinea fowls, 2 pairs South African guinea fowls,. 4 pairs.
