FINED £10

ILLEGAL SALE OF LIQUOR.

Further evidence was heard at the Magistrate's Court yesterday, after "The Post" went to press, in the case in which a woman named Isabella Edwards was charged with selling liquor in the nolicense area of Wellington South. Sub-Inspector CummingE prosecuted, and the accused was represented by Mr. P. Jackson. Several witnesses were called by counsel, after which the Bench intimated that convictions would be entered. "I am asked," said Mr. F. K. Hunt, S.M 1., "to "disbelieve Constable Carter's story, which is a, very connected one. I am told that it is as a result of.his imagination, and requires corroboration. This is not necessary. I believe the officer, but I am sorry to see this woman get into the box and tell the story she did I accept the connected story of the con stable in preference to the rambling one ol the defendant." On the first count a fine of £10 was inflicted, and on the second count the defendant was convicted and discharged. Charges of selling liquor in a no-license area, were preferred against Roy Hall, and George Marsh was called upon to answer a charge of being found on the premises at 109, Constable street, when, liquor was seized under warrant. "It is no use my calling witnesses," began Mr. Jackson, "if Your Worship has decided to accept the evidence of Constable Carter." "Not a' bit," returned the Bench. "However, I won't hurt Hall much more. I have already fined him £30." Counsel: "We cannot admit the. charges." His Worship (to Sub-Inspector Oummings): "Very well. Prove the case." Formal evidence was then given by Constable Carter, after which the defendant Marsh was fined £2 and costs, and Hall was convicted and ordered to pay the costs.

'On Wednesday evening next a public meeting, which will be addressed by the Mayor and several city councillors, will be held in the Methodist .Churchroom, Ngaio, at 8 o'clock, to consider the Onslow Mater and drainage proposals.
