UNITED STATES STANDS FIRM
NEWiYOBK; lltK April. . The. United State? has replied to Canada's protest regarding shipping, refusing to withdraw the contract provision complained of.
The United States Shipping Board re-' cently found a considerable number of purchasers among Canadians of its smaller vessels. The Anti-Saloon League, however, drew the board's attention.. to. the fact that with the transfer pf these vessels to tl^e British registry they> entered the liquor-smuggling trade. The board therefore wrote a clause into the sales agreement whereby vessels must not engage in .practices which are unlawful in the United States. The Canadian Government entered a- protest, taking the ground that.if these ships were interfered with outside the three-mile limit now it would be a violation of international law.
