HOUSING CONDITIONS

MR. P. FRASER'S VIEWS.

Housing conditions in Wellington w.ere referred to by Mr. P. Fraser, M.P., during the course of his Mayoral election address at Island Bay last night; Mr. Fraser spoke of the report from Auckland, published in last night's "Post" dealing with the bad conditions prevailing in • the . Northern city, but asserted that the conditions in Auckland, bad as they were, were not eo acute as in Wellington. Mr. Fraser appealed to everybody, whether members of churches, sooieties, or leagues, to make a united effort to remedy the overcrowding which existed at the present time. Whatever the result of the municipal election,, he and the other Labour candidates would be onlv too willing to co-operate with anybody towards a solution of the problem, which, he said, was a terrible one.

A Dunedin s.esid<jnt, after a visit to Cromwell, informed the "Star" that the Cromwell Development Company's irrigation scheme ia now proved right up to expectations. The scheme was eo to left the Ka-warau River as to enable the water to run by ijravitation *° the turbines, the power generated by the turbines being used to pump the water to a height rtf 160 odd feet into the main distributing race from which the whole of the Cromwell Flat may be irrigated by gravitation. It was a huge and adventurous ■undertaking, and is now crowned with success. The main race has been twice filled, though at the time of the filling the river was at the lowest level recorded this season, thereby affording the settlers the evidence of their eyes that all promises of efficiency have been redeemed, and the company is now ready to arrange for the delivery of water to individual properties as soon as the growin." time arrives. The irrigation period is reckonod from 15th September to 15th March.
