HUTT RIVER BOARD
REVIEW v "TNANCES.
The Hutt Rive.' ojrd met last evening, when there were present Messrs. SW. T. Strand (chairman). Mitchell, Futter, Clendon, and Mabey. "The year," sai dthe chairman, "was started with a debit balance of £542 9s 4d. .but this has all, been wiped off." fn addition, the year had ended with a credit balance of £328. Besides this, works had been done out of revenue to the amount of £2831, which, in ordinary ciucumstaoces, would have' had to come out 'of loan account. Really, the year had therefore shown a credit balance of over £3000. Out of this amount £165 ■was spent in tree-planting. Stating- that the. inoome of the board was likely to be the same this year as !ast, Mr. Clendon suggested that the rates of the borough be reduced by at ieast £500. The rates were rather heavy, and the chance to lower the rates wai at hand. "If we could possibly do it, I should very much like to see the rates reduced," said the chairman. "However, .1 think you are a little premature," he roatjeutd. Air. Flitter urged that the work in liand should be continued by the present board in nreference to p, reduction of rates, as the same members might not be on the board next year. "I think it is quite probable that a reduction in the rates is likely, but we cannot say- until an estimate of finance ia submitted, in about three weeks time," said the chairman. The engineer to the board was instructed to visit the locality behind Mason's Garden with a view to carrying out protective work, the river being considered dangerous at that point. About an acre of land at Adams's pnddock is to be surveyed with a view of acquiring it in order to straighten the channel at that point. Accounts were passed amounting to £403 9 a Bd.
