PENALTY FOB BOOKMAKER.

DUNEDIN, This Day. Lewis Nathaniel Curtis was fined £400 for carrying on business as a bookmaker. The sub-inspector stated that on 3rd April when racing was in progress in Christchurch a man was sent to accused to make a bet. Incidentally the horse won, and paid a good dividend. Before this, however, detectives appeared on the scene, when a marked 10s note was found in possession of accused, who also had £111 in notes and £148 in •cheques. He was quite frank in admitting the offence. He had not previously been convicted in Dunedin, but had been twice fined in Christchurch. Counsel for defendant stated that, the man who had given defendantaway had a difference with Curtis, and set himself to trap him. Further, ho had gone afterwards to Curtis and asked him foj enough money to leave the country. The Magistrate stated that, having been given a good character, he did not propose imprisoning Curtis.
