LOCAL GOVERNMENT AREAS.

LONDON, 20th February. New Zealand may take it as a very great compliment that the Hon. Arthur M. Myers should have been selected a member of the Royal Commission on Local Government Areas, whose- chairman will be Lord Onslow.- The- duties of the body will be :—
To inquire as to existing law and procedure relating to the extensions of county boroughs and the creation of new county boroughs in England and Wales, and the effect of such extensions or crea-> tions on the administration of the councils of non-county boroughs, urban districts, and rural districts; to investigate the relations between these several local authorities; and generally to make recommendations as to their constitution, areas, and functions.
Doubtless, it wag recognised in high quarters that Mr. Myers possessed special qualifications for the work which will be undertaken, as his experience of municipal affairs in New Zealand has been of long duration, and with results that have been very gratifying; locally. The Comniission •is to deal with matters of municipal government generally, and its deliberations may affect the whole of- the municipal life of the Empire. The other, members are:—Lord Straehie, Lieut.-General Sir George Macdonogh, X.C.8., K.C.M.G., Sir W. Ryland D. Adkins, K.C., M.P., Sir Lewis Beard, Sir William Middlebrook, Sir Walter P.Nicholas, Mr. E. Honoratus Lloyd, K.C., Mr. H. G. Pritchard, Mr. W. R. Buchanan Itiddell, Mr. E. R. Turton, M.P., and Lieut-Colonel Seymour Williams. The secretary of the Commission is Mr. Michael Hesteltine, C.8., of the Ministry of Health, Whitehall, S.W.I.
