EXPLANATION WANTED
There are still three anti-party candidates in the /fight for the Mayoralty. It is generally recognised that if they all remain in the contest it will mean that the Party candidate's chances of success will be increased proportionately. The odds in Mr. Eraser's favour will be three to one; for his opponents will not be opposing him so much as eaoh other. The sensible course for the three candidates to follow under these circumstances would be to submit their candidature to the judgment of an impartial tribunal. This would involve agreement that two should retire in favour of the candidate selected by such a tribunal. We cannot see that any of the candidates would suffer by adopting such a course. The two who would be called upon to retire might consider they were sacrificing their chances of obtaining the Mayoralty. In reality, they would be making only a small sacrifice of a poor chance. They would be advancing the public interest in a public-spirited manner; instead of persisting in a selfish endeavour which'^ould bring them nothing but ignominious defeat. It is reported that efforts have been made to induce the candidates to realise this arid to act in accordance with their publicly-expressed concern for the public welfare; but that the negotiations have resulted in a deadlock. If this is so, it now becomes the duty of the gentlemen who have conducted the negotiations to explain to the public what has been attempted and why the efforts have been unsuccessful. An impartial statement will enable the doctors tfl dSMh unxLsxsiaud.ih£.jaQaiiicii.
