W.C.T.U. CONFERENCE
NO TRUCE IN THE CONFLICT,
INVERCARGILL, 7th March. The thirty-eighth annual conference of fclie New Zealand Women's Christian Temperance Union opened to-day. Delogates were present from all parts of the Dominion. Committee work was done during the day, and in the evening there was a, public welcome, at which thu Mayor presided.
Mrs. Don, Dominion president, responded on behalf of the delegates. Mr. J. S. Baxter, on behalf of the local Prohibition League, said that despite the results of the last poll, there would be no truce iii the conflict with the liquor traffic. Whatever legislation might be suggested in the liquor interests, it would be legislation that would tie the traffic round the necks of the people. He exhorted his hearer.* to keep watch and take steps to show the Prime Minister and members of Parliament that they would not stand any retrograde legislation in dealing with the traffic.
