Dublin was shaken by a terrific explosion, caused by a mine planted on the Royal Canal at Blackquire Bridge, which was destroyed.

Fourteen internees in Galway Gaol cut through the bars of their cells with jacksaws and escaped. Rope ladders thrown to them enabled them to escape over the walls.
