The Right Hon. Evelyn Cecil, M.P., headed a deputation to the Lord Chancellor, Viscount Cave, to protest against the present Press reports of divorce and similar cases, which, he declared, were often revolting and lowering to the public morals. Ho foreign nation allowed such a detailed publication as Britain permitted.

The deputation handed over a petition signed by a quarter of a. million people.

The Lord Chancellor, in a sympathetic reply, pointed out the difficulty of. a legal suppression of reports, and suggested a conference with newspaper proprietors and editors and the promotion of a dehate in the House of Commons in order to organise public opinion in favour of the deputation's object.
