POULTRY INDUSTRY

SEEKING BRITISH MARKETS.

(IX TELEGRAPH.—PIIEBS .ASSOCIATION.)

NELSON, 7th March.

The annual conference of the New Zealand Poultry Association opened to-day. In the absence of the president (Mr, John Jiiryis), Mr. J. Liggins was appointed chairman. Mr. Jarvis wrote thanking the delegates for their sympathy iv his infirmity. The chairman, in the course of his remarks, said that from all parts of tho Dominion, from Whangarei to Rotorua., and as tar south as Invercarglll and Dunedin, the delegates had assembled to do their best for the indust^ry, which shows a wonderful increase. The Government experts, Messrs. F. C. Brown, C. Cassen, J. Jarett, and C. Cocker, were also present. Mr. T. Bustoni lecturer and organiser for the New Zealand'farmers and.producers, attended the conference, explaining the advantages of joining the larger producing organisation. The delegates, numbering.43, were accorded a civic welcome by the Mayor (Mr. W. Lock). Speeches of welcome were also made by Mr. H. Atmore, M.P., Hon. W. W. Snodgrass, and Mr. A. Gilbert, chairman of the Chamber of Commerce.

Mr. J. B. Menett, in replying, said the poultry industry was gradually coming into its own. in recognition. In America the heads of the agricultural universities were professors of poultry husbandry. They took the highest position in t.he department: here they took the lowest. This disposition, must and would be changed. Referring to export, he said they could supply the great overseas market extended by England's demand. By carefully guarding the quality of their ejcperimental shipments, they should lay the foundation of an industry that was unbounded ■by its possibilties, and had no limitation for increasing the wealth of the land. It was for them to augment and maintain their industries. In this the-poijltryme-n knew no creed and no party. They aimed to acquit themselves with honest labour and determined effort, and the encouragement given to-day would enable them to sustain their efforts and achieve great ends.
