LIBERAL RE-UNION
SIMON'S SNUB TO LLOYD GEORGE.
(Received sth March, 9.30 a.m.)
LONDON, 4th March,
Sir John Simon, in an important and vigorous speech at Cleckheaton, replied to Mr. Lloyd George's speech on Liberal reunion. He said: "Mr. Lloyd George omitted to mention the only qualification for political life that commanded public confidence, namely, the quality of speaking what you really believe and not changing your political: destination with every wind that blows.. Unity by some dramatic gesture, secret conclave, or historic handshake is too romantic and pictorial. It will not do Liberalism any good to double its membership at the expense of halving its energy. What the Liberal army wants is not so much political strategy and manoeuvres, but more men in the line and the trenches to go over the top."
