PRESENTATION OF MEDALS

DUNEDIN, 3rd March. At the Fir© Brigades' Conference the election of officers resulted:—President, Superintendent Barnard (Palmerston North); vice-presidents. Captain Morrison (Hillside), Superintendent Henderson (Hastings); secretary, Cap-tain. Watt* (Newmarket). Gold stars for 25 years' service were presented by the Hon. W. Downie Stewart to Foreman Sharp (Wanganui Raceoourse), Deputy -Superintendent Perritt (Wangajiui Racecourse), Deputy-Superin-tendent Davidson (Hokifcika), Fireman G. Leelie (Dunedin), Foreman Flynn (Hastings), Fireman Catheroll (Hastings), Secretary Boys (Nelson), Secretary Burrows (Spit); past president's medal to Superintendent Keith (Hastings). A request was made to the Hon. W. Downie Stewart for 'a renewal of the privileges extended to tbe association in 1920. i The Minister said' New Zealand occupied a good position as far as fire brigades were concerned, and the Government was anxious to assist, the brigades. It hoped that, it would be possible at au early date to restore privileges. One direotion in which an advance was beinp made was in thp standardisation of equipment with the view of obtaining supplies in New Zealand He was pleased to say the results so far obtained by local manufacturers was not only considered satisfactory by Captain Hugo, but the articles were equal to the best .products which it had been neoosewy to import from abroad. DUNEDIN, 4th March. ' Competitions amongst firemen from all parts of New Zealand affiliated with the United Fire Brigades' Association comTnenced 'on" Saturday morningl on the Caledonian Ground. Teams from over sixty brigades are taking part, and there was considerable keenness amongst the men. The weather was unfavourable during most of the day, and the ground was somewhat heavy after rain which fell on the previous night. The Hon. Downie Stewart, Minister of Internal Affairs, was present, and took a keen interest in the proceedings up to the time he left to eaten the second express for the north. ' . The Hillside (Dunedin Railway), which won the principal shields last year, is. again well in the lead for the shields this year. In the high-pressure shield competition the points gained so far are:—Hillside, 28; Thames, 20; Alexandra, 12; St. Kilda, 9; Greymouth, 8; Aldington Railway, 7;,Waihi, 6; Dannevirke, 5; Onehunga, 4; Masterton, 3. The aggregate for the Bhield competition points gained so- far are:—Hillside, 46; Thames, 20; Addington, 13; Alexandra, 12; New Brighton, 9; St. Kilda, 9; Greymouth, 8; Waihi, 6; Dannevirke, 5; Devonport, 4; Greenlane (Auckland), 4; Onehunga, 4; Carterton, 3; Masterton, 3; Patea, 2. The following are the results:— ■ Two-men Coupling Event,—New Brighton (38sec), 1; Hillsile Railway (40 3-sseo). 2; Addington Railway (42sec), 3; Devonport (4g 2-ssec). 4; Carterton (46 3-sseo), 5: Patea (47sec), 6: St. Kilda and Alex-andra,-a tie (47 2-ssec).
