SATURDAY'S RACES

,THE NELSON MEETING

(Bit TEMGRAPB.)

(F8!)K "SIX LANCILOT.")

NELSON, 3rd March,

, The Nelson Jockey Club was unfortunate in the weather experienced for the concluding day of its Annual Meeting held at the Richmond Racecouse on Saturday. Everything went well untilafter the third race was decided, when the clouds banked up from the east and rain set in. With a slight break now and then the rain fell heavily until after the concluding event. The enclosures got in a wet and sloppy state, aud many of the club's patrons who went unprovided with coats got wet through. There was a big falling off in the totalisatoireceipts for the last four events. The amount handled for the day was £14,912 against £17,457 for the corresponding day last year/'.The total for the meeting was. £27,480, compared with £27,599 for the previous year, a decrease of £110. . At the finish of- the Tahuna Hack Welter .Blue. Socks left the rails and slightly interfered with' Blackhead. The Judicial Committee met, but were satisfied with the explanation of E. S. Bagby. In the Wakatu Trot, Maydorn parted company with D. Withers about half a mile from home, but the rider escaped injury. The scratching of Jolly Bruce and FriKord for the Trial Stakes reduced the number of runners to six. The Bolter and Martinique were the popular picks. They both ran well, but had to be content with the minor places-behind Jonquil, who scored the first win at the meeting for Mr. J. J. Corry, of Blenheim. Axle, runner-up to Blue Socks on the previous day, did not run as well as expected. Five of the fifteen acceptors for the Maitai Trot failed to parade. The scratch horse, Mahene was a good favourite, bnt she never got in the front division. The leading division comprised Oakhampton, Alicel, and Holly Boy, until the latter broke at the back of the course. Holly Boy and Alicel drew right away, the first-named outstaying his opponent. Tho winner runs in the nomination of R. A. Armstrong, a prominent official of the Wellington Trotting Club, and was driven by S. M. August. Sweet Kathleen spoilt any chance she had by breaking badly. Patuki and Stream were taken out of the Redwood Memorial, leaving in seven runners. Printemps, Prince Ferouz, and Pantler were prominent in the early stages. Pantler led into the straight, but Grim Joke beat him comfortably at the finish. Printemps and Cheer Up did best of the others. All started t*r the Tahuna Hack Welter except .1* -aSirk. Blue Socks was a good, favourite. Demonstrate, Rimutaka, and Zany were prominent to the turn; they were done with at the distance, where Blue Socks came through and won after an interesting race. Blackhead, Bayana, and Grand Duchy did best of the others. Half a dozen withdrawals from the Flying Handicap reduced the number of runners to five. Jackaroo was best backed, and ran a good race, but he could only get second to Barleycorn, who was suited by the going. Kikini and Matareka were next to the other pair. Barleycorn, who made Mr. Corry's second winner, paid a great price. There were a dozen runners for the Wakatu Trot. At. the stand Willowvere was leading Pearl Coronado, with Bonnie Thorpe and Ngamutu next. Pearl Coronado took charge at the back, but Bonnie, Thorpe came again in the straight and a good finish resulted. Pearl Coronado runs in the nomination of L. Cloake, and was ridden, by S. M. August. Four ■ scratchings for the Stoke Hack Handicap reduced the runners to five. The .Trentham-trained Patuki was iavourite. He was always well placed, and won with something in hand from Bonnie Nurse, who lasted long enough to beat Parorangi for second place. There were six runners for the Waimea Welter, the concluding event. The race was run in a steady downpour, and it was difficult to distinguish the jockeys "at the finish. Probate and Counter Attack were prominent in the- early part. Island, who was a good favourite, took ■ charge in the straight and won fairly j easily from Counter Attack, with Pink Rose and Probate next.
