KELBURN TRAM

PURCHASE PROPOSAL

MR. MITCHELL'S OPPOSITION.

Referring to the need for improved transport facilities in the city. 111 the course of his Mayoral campaign address last evening, Mr. G. Mitchell opposed the purchase of the Kelburn tramway.

The present service, he maintained!, was very efficiently run, and he did not see how the citizens and residents of the district would be any better served by acquiring it. Extensions could certainly be made, but even then the tram would only serve a limited number of people at a very heavy cost, and probably before the extensions could be completed the increase in traffic would make some additional service necessary, aoirt from the present time and any extension that might be made. It therefore appeared that it would be better business to leave the Kelburn tram as at .present, und perhaps use a trackless car to servo other people further on, and to use the money required for the purchase for the construction of a new line to serve those who were not served at present. The hfll would then have two services with no greater outlay than the amount it would cost to buy the present one. In putting the proposal to buy the Kelburn tram before the people, the council should make a clear statement of all the advantages and disadvantages of such a purchase, and the opinions of its expert advisers in the matters.
