A FINE INSTITUTION

CITIZENS' DAY NURSERY.

An annual meeting of special interest held yesterday afternoon was that of the Citizens' Day Nursery, the meeting taking place at the nursery in Kent terrace. Lady Luke presiding. Mrs. Alexander Gray read the report, which stated that the nursery was opened by Her Excellency Viscountess Jellicoe on 14th December, 1921. The institution has amply fulfilled the purpose for which it was established, said the report, ,tlie average attendance of little ones being • from 12 to 22 per day. Some of these are brought to the nursery as early as 7.30 in the morning, as the mothers go out to work in laundries and factories. The children are provided with a good wholesome meal in the middle of the day. and it has been one of the most gratifying things to notice the improvement in health of those who come regularly. Miss Stewart, the matron, and her nurse assistant were thanked for their excellent care and management.

In recording the success of the year's work, the committee gratefully acknowledge a debt of gratitude to the many kind suporters and subscribers, through whose help and generosity this valuable institution has been brought into existence and thoroughly and firmly established. Amongst the numerous benefactors mentiom must be made of Mr. J. T. Martin, general manager of the firm of Wright, Stephenson, and Co., Ltd., and Mr. William Simm, general manager of the D.1.C., to whose kindness and generous assistance the committee and general public are greatly indebted. Thanks are also due to Dr. Elliott for valued medical advice when required ; to Messrs. Luke and Kennedy, the lion, solicitors, who generously took the necessary steps for the formal incorporation of the society under ''The Incorporated Societies Act." also the trustees of the T. G. Maciirthy Trust for a generous donation of £100; to the Commercial Travellers' Association for a

Christmas gift of £25; and to Sir Jehangir Kothart, of Karachi, a visitor from India, who expressed great interest in the work and through Her Excellency Viscountoss Jellicoe made a generous donation of £20 to the funds. They also thanked the Napier Fish Company and Mr. Whale, butcher, For free donations. Votes of thanks were passed to the matron, Lady Luke, and Mrs. Alex. Gray, for hrr work as secretary, a position she wished to retire from, Mrs. 11. Kennedy, of Central terrace, iKelburn, consenting to carry on her work. Special thanks were accorded to the House Committee, with mention of the occupiers of the chair, Mesdames Leicester and J. Myers. The following officers were elected :—• President, Lady Luke; hou. vice-presi-dents, Lady Stout, Mrs. W. F. Massey, Mrs. H. Crawford; vice-presidents, Mesdames Alex. Gray, J. Myers, Townsend. W. G. Reid, Frazer, and Leicester; treasurer, Mi'Si J.' I?> Firth ;.,committee, .Mesdames Murphy/ von Haast, W. -Luke, 1. Levi, Adamsou, J. Hannah, D. Riddiford, Elliott, Clark, Gibbs, Gill, Misses Rothenberg and Wallace.

Leave of absence was granted to Mrs. J. Hannah and to Mrs. Gibbs, who are leaving for extended visits abroad.

The balance-sheet for tho period ended 31st October, 1922, showed the following assets r-r-Furniture, furnishings, and equipment, £150; cash at Post Office Savings Bank, £1014 9s 9d; accrued interest to date £18 6s 6d; at National Bank of New Zealand, £32 2s 9d. The liabilities to sundry creditors totalled £94 15s 3d.
