LESS THAN EXPECTED
RAIN DAMAGE TO* CROPS.
(II IILB«Ri?H._?BB8S ASSOCIAMOJf.) CHRISTCHURCH, 30th January.
The fear was general, as the result of the week-end deluge,. that the cereal crops coming within the area of the downfall following on the showery, unfavourable weather of the preceding fortnight would be very extensively damaged. To gain first-hand knowledge of the effect a "Press" representative today had a run round the various districts in North Canterbury that came within the scope of the downfall. His conclusions are that the damage is not so widespread or so severe' as wag anticipated would be the case. In some localities the wheat, both standing and in stook, was badly discoloured, and affected with mildew (loose) smut. A number of crops in several localties, moreover, showed signs of, incipient sprouting. • Fortunately, the weather was especially favourable to-day for arresting snch troubles as rust and sprouting. A good drying wind set in during the early part of the day, enabling cutting to be recommenced throughout the whole of the' districts covered.
