FALSE PRETENCES
VALUELESS CHEQUE FOR MOTOR,
A young man named Patrick M'Kibbon, alias Law, alias M'Leod, alias Clayton, alias Whitman, appeared before Mr. W. G. Riddell, S.M., at the Magistrate's Court today charged with obtaining a Ford motor valued at £75 and a tin of benzine valued at 13a 6d from Albert Ernest Edward Orlando Wellington Brooks, by means of a valueless cheque signed H. A. Clayton. A further charge of obtaining a tin of benzine'valued at 13s 6d and £5 in money from John Keel by a.similar false pretence,'was also preferred against the accused. Detective Nuttall prosecuted. The accused was not represented by counsel.
The complainant Brooks said that the accused had called at witness's house at Lower Hutt, and had stated,that He was a veterinary surgeon anS had had an accident to his seven-seater touring 'car. He asked witness if he had a car which would do for "running about"-in. Witness had a two-seater Ford, and an arrangement was entered into, whereby the accused was to buy the car for £75. The pair drove into Wellington, and visited the garage of John Keel, in Molesworth street, where a tin of benzine was pur-' chased. The accused then said that he had left his cheque book wifh his father and upon being given a blank cheque form by witness, filled it in for the value of the motor-car, and the tin of benzine. Evidence was also given by John Keel. Detective Nuttall, read a signed statement, which the accused had made, admitting the offences charged. At the conclusion of the case for the Crown, the accused, who pleaded guilty, was committed to the Supreme Court.for sentence. .
