NATIONAL CHAMPIONS

YESTERDAY AT TIMAWJ

CANTERBURY SCORING WELL.

(BI MLEGRAPH.—SPECIAL TO 181 [OBT.) TIMARU, This Day. Although the day was fine rain came on toward^ evening,' and it continued showery daring the evening's proceedings. . Despite this, there was a big attendance at the New Zealand National Swimming Championships, and the sport provided was very interesting. Proceedings commenced with the heats of the 75 yards intermediate girls' championship. Both Miss E. Walrond (Auckland) and Miss_ Page (Auckland) won their respective events in comfortable fashion. In the final., for which Miss Imandt (Wellington) had qualified, there was a good race between the three Auckland representatives. They swam .abreast to the SO ,yards mark, where Miss-Page had a slight lead from Miss 'Walrond and I Miss Stockley, with Miss Mather and Miss Imandt a yard behind the champion. ' Miss Page maintained her advantage to the tape, and had,.a.foot to the good. All three place-getters gained the standard. Miss, linandt put up her best swim to date, and was about thret. yards back at the finish.

BATCHELOR TAKES 220 YARDS.

The ■ 220. yards senior championship was a spirited race,. although at the finish N. Batchelor (Canterbury) won without beine unduly 'pushed. Enwright (Auckland) broke twice, but at the third attempt all got away well Enwright was first up, but Murrell (Wellington) immediately took the lead and set a fast pace. He reached the first fifty in 35. 3-ssec, a foot in front of , Batchelor . and Enwright. Racing along the next stretch. Murrell further increased his lead, and at the hundred mark he was three yards to the good. This had taken 66sec Going baGk to the 150 mark, Murrell commenced to tire, and was caught by Batchelor and Enwright, who both turned ahead of him. On the fourth stretch Batchelor commenced to forge ahead, arid Atkinson (Canterbury) also made a forward move and caught Enwright. In this order they raced to the. 200 yards, where Batchelor had a. four yards' lead; this,he "easily maintained to the finish, although he slowed down considerably. Enwright and Atkinson were having a desperate struggle for second place, both sprinting to tneir utmost, and the former just won on the touch.. The time just beat standard, and was the slowest recorded since the championships were ■ previously held here. Murrell made the pace too, hot, and couid not see the distance out. Edwards swam his best, aiid finished fourth, three yard 3 behind Atkinson.

ANOTHER RECORD GONE. As tha 50 yards junior girls' breaststroke was won in the record, time of 43 2-ssec, it was not to be expected that Miss Breen could win. She; however, performed creditably, and just failed to gain standard. ;\ In the junior boys' breaststroke, Boyd (Wanganui) won easily. 'Claridge fWellington) appeared to get third place, but Cameron was placed.in ..that position. Bridson (Wellington), ; .was j.-iwat;' behind Clliridge, cfo3>'*p: r;~-yr :,.r-- r - : - s :,- y \

CLARIDGK TOO GOOD,

• The! intermediate boys competed: over the half-mile, and the se\en starters crowded the bath From the start. Claridge (Wellington) and- Lindsay (South Canterbury) .sorted, themselves, out. At the hundred mark Lindsay turned in front of Claridge, but on the next stretch the latter took the lead, and, with a quarter of the distance gone, Claridge was four yards in front, with Wilkinson, Cameron, and Barker a bit back. This- order was maintained for two' more laps, with Lindsay making hard efforts to catch the leader, Wilkinson, leaving Cameron and Barker. At the] 440 mark Claridge was swimming easily in front, and was not at all troubled by the strenuous efforts of Lindsay to catch him, and with 650 yards gone it was evident that the Timaru boy had taken a lot out of himself. Wilkinson could: be noticed gradually gaining on Lindsay, but Claridgo meanwhile, was taking his- time out in front, and, increasing his.lead at every stretch, went on to win in easy fashion,, by 25 yards from Lindsay, who just beat Wilkinson, who had come up in fine style. The time Was slow, conveying the idta that the winner was not. hustled.. , WELLINGTON POLO TEAM. Wellington had a game of polo with a scratch team, and although the game was not taken seriously it served as good practice,-and the final on Wednesday night is likely to be a close game. Alrea-dy a great deal of interest is being - shown in the game, and there will be a lot of excitement, when it takes place. 'Wellington are favourites, and their' prospects look, good..
