Though th«re was no rain yesterSay at Eastbourne, a heavy northerly wind made things uncomfortable far those who visited the carnival which is being held on the Recreation Ground. The attendance in the afternoon was mainly confined to children, who spent a cheer-' ful time , with races over various distances and in visiting the different sideshows and queen booths.

The attendance in the evening wa» considerably increased,' the boats from the city all carrying large numbers of passengers. The side-shows did good business, especially the queen candidates' booths, where bands of waiters

" oarried on" during the day to the general profit. ■

There are four .candidates for-- queen honours, and each has a separate booth in the vicinity of the new tennis courts. 'The first is occupied by the council's candidate, where novelties of - variouskinds are on sale, and where votes are disposed of. The Pl'unket Society occupies the-next'tent, and they have a modern version of " Aunt Sally," as ■well as raffles on works of art, and a guessing competition for '•' Podgy, the Plunket pig." The third stand is occupied by the football club, who are conducting a form of-, surprise packets, as well as numberless guessing competitions, and.in between whiles the sellers dispose of fruit, vegetables, cakas, and an endless supply of fancy goods. The last tent is occupied by the Combined Sports,, who conduct a number of novelty events. In- addition to these four tents, there are coconut shies, • roundabouts, hoop-la,, a fat lady, what is said to be the smallest racehorse in the world, Alvanti's Vaudeville Entertainers, a buck-jumping show, '- jinking " the penny, and. a number of other money-enticing entertainments. ■ In addition, afternoon tea, ice cream, sweets, cigarettes, and other articles are procurable on the ground. ■ -During the afternoon about three hundred sailors from the French cruiser Jules Michelet paid z! visit "to the carnival ground, arid special events were put on for their particular benefit. A great deal of amusement was caused 1 when the queen workers attempted to sell tickets in various schemes to the French sailors,, who found it very convenient to adopt an attitude of not understanding. . A dance recital was given in the afternoon by pupils .of Miss Kathleen O'Brien, at which there wsis an excellent attendance. Community singing was indulged in between,4 and. 5 o'clock by the numbers .of children present. A variety concert, with an excellent aeries of items, was given in the evening. The wiring, of the ground has now been completed, and the effect of the increased lighting facilities was much appreciated. .

Mr. R: B. Witty, the organiser, and his staff worked incessantly in catching up the arrears of work caused by the heavy rain : at the end '.-of Jast weeks: and everything moved with-greater "precision than had been the case on Friday.
