"A FOOLISH WIVES."
" Foolish Wives," Universal'a costly photodrama of life and intrigue at Monte Carlo, commences its season at the Paramount and Artcraft Theatres on Friday next. It has been heralded as the costliest biggest picture ever screened. It lives up to its. promises. Never has there been such a kaleidoscopic array of beautiful settings and artistic photography combined with such adept characterisation and careful direction. Erich yon Stroheim, the'anthor, director, and star of the picture, has made a screen masterpiece. Whatever faults it may have, and no picture is perfect, they are submerged by the force of the theme, by the realness of the atmosphere, and by the vivid, portrayals of yon Stroheim and his supporting cast. Mont« Carlo, its principal buildings, it» crowds, its activities, and ite very spirit have been transferred to the screen for "Foolish Wives." The colourful settings, the activities of the noted pleasure resort, are merely backgrounds for the impelling story of " Count " Sergus Karamzin, , renegade Russian captain, debonair adventurer, and consummate villain. The role of the bogus count is played by vpn Stroheim himself. The count and his accomplices, two Russian " princesses," played by Maude George and Mac Busch, are international crooks, who prey upon ■wealthy visitors to Monte Carlo. Special rnuiical scores are being arranged by Mr. C. Parnell (Paramount) and Mrs. A. Wright (Artcraft), and excellent results are assured.
