■ Referring to. the action of the Defence Department in closing the road on' the harbour's edge near Mahanga Bay, Miramar, the.'Minister of Defence (the Hon. Sir R. H. Rhodes) made the following statement to-day: "It was found," he said,' "that the road was being corroded owing to the action of the sea, and had become unsafe for motor -or other wheel traffic." The road, he added, was not now required by the Defence Department, and they did not feel /obliged to spend money upon it. There was nothing for, it, therefore, but to close the road. 'There was no objection to pedestrians using the. road. The suggestion had been .made that some of the difficulty could be overcome by putting up a. notice that the read was 'unsafe for traffic, and letting motorists and others fake the risk if they cared to use the road.
