CONCRETE PROPOSAL
TO ENCOURAGE FRUITGROWING.
LONDON, 27th January.
The ''Morning Post," in a leader on Imperial preference, states that the duty on currants is 2s per hundredweight, and half a guinea, a hundredweight for other dried fruits. Ex-isoldier settlements are being established in Australasia for the production of dried fruit. It is calculated that by 1927 the amount available for export will be, 39,000 tons. The sale • prices of dried fruits have been high, but as they decline" Australia will be able to compete /with foreign production by means' of the present preference, which is absurdly small, being a deduction of one-sixth of the duty. The "Morning Post" advocates the remission of duty altogether on Australian dried fruit,
