SHEFFIELD SHIELD

VICTORIA BATTING WELL.

(UNHID PRESS ASSOCIATION.—COPTMOBT.)

SYDNEY, 26th January. The start of the Sheffield Shield match was delayed an hour owing to overnight raip having softened the pitch near the wicket, though it was covered by a tarpaulin. It played true, however, but was without fire.

Woodfull was scratchy, and lucky in having two chances missed. Finally he was dismissed by a wonderful catch, Oldfield running from the wicket. He batted for 68 minutes. Ryder and Hartkopf set up a sterling fast-scoring partnership, which yielded 118 runs. Ryder was twice missed early in his innings. He knocked a couple of 6's. Park and Ransford were content with safe play. The state of the wicket handicapped the fast bowlers. The fielding was somewhat below, standard, arid several catches were missed.

Victoria have lost five wickets for 320 (Mayne 17, Wopdfull 27, Ryder 71, Hartkopf 63, Park 65 not out, Ransford 40, Wallis 24 not out).
