DEADLOCK AT LAUSANNE

The Graves Sub-Commission held its final meeting with the foriorn hope of inducing the Turks to modify'their attitude regarding the Anzac zone and the sixteen cemeteries in other parts of Gallipoli. The area of the Anzac zone is about 2i square miles, the whole of which, apart fijom the actual Australian cemeteries, consists of a mass of trenches, wherein scattered bones are still found from time to time. The zone is therefore, properly r'egardable as one huge cemetery.

The Turks again absolutely declined to grant the ownership of anything, except the, actual enclosed cemeteries. The British Delegation's reply was the same as yesterday—namely, " We decline to disturb our dead, and will not leave Gallipoli until the safety, of the graves is assured." , The deadlock is therefore as complete as possible.

" Meanwhile," the delegation reports* '•' we have agreed that, if further cemeteries ..for the scattered bones still un buried, must be made, we will consult the Turks with, a viewj of fixing sites."
