OIL VERSUS STEAM.
One hundred and fourteen oil tanker* intended for bulk oil carrying have' been built, to date, the progressive demand far these ships showing an increase from 1,500,000 tons in July, 1914, rising U> close on 3.000,000 tons in 1919 and just over 5,000;.000'in 1922. The gross tonnage of vessels fitted f oy or converted to oil burning has risen from 5,000,000 odd tons in 1919 to over "14,----000,000 in 1922, though some of these ships can be easily altered for coal-burn-ing if oil should be unobtainable. Among vessels altered were the Berengaria, Mauretania. and Aquitania. The use of internal combustion engines continues.'to develop, showing an increase from 912 vessels in 1919 to. 1620 in 1922. Sixtysix of these are over 6000 tons. The six largest vessels fitted with Diesel oil engine's are over 9000 tons, the biggest being the Zoppoi of 9932 gross tons. ■ .'.
