PRICE OF LAMB FOR EXPORT.

The announcement of the New Zealand Meat Producers' Board in " The Post " yesterday that definite offers had been made of 10jd per lb for prime Canterbury lamb of 421b and under was received with surprise by a freezing works authority. It was stated that the last Addington sales of such lambs was at the rate of 9|d, although one firm was paying as high as 10£rl; but that may have been contracted for early shipment at that price. In any case, it was misleading to quote an extreme price, for 10£ d was not the basis. Business done in the South Island, too, differed from that in the North in some of the methods. For instance,. the 10^d per lb would be for the buyer taking skin and fat, or "all sunk," as it is called; whereas in the Wellington district ,9^d was paid on the farms, and for places away back oven less. The Addington prices were for the stock at the yards, all droving and transport charges paid. It was added : "There is no prospect of a rise in the price of kmb, but there is a likelihood of a fall. High prices check consumption, and prices are high. Hecent heavy shipments of Australian and Argentine lambs must affect the prices for New Zealand, notwithstanding the superior quality of our own lamb."
