EASTBOURNE CARNIVAL

A preliminary announcement in regard to the Eastbourne Carnival, which opens on the Recreation Ground, on Saturday, 27fch January, and runs for eight days, appears in the advertising columns. The programme of entertainment to be provided for visitors during the period of the carnival is an extensive one, and inclndes many attractions. There are to be innumerable side-shows, roundabouts, treasure hunts, jazz dancing, swimming,' and athletic spoTts, tennis competitions, and a baby show. The opening day will be controlled by the Phinket Society, and the day's programme will bs specially arranged for children, finishing m the evening with a battle of flowers. A seaplane is being imported for the occasion, and those desiring to indulge in this sensational amusement will have a daily opportunity of doing so. A special feature of the carnival wiE be the . queen contest, nominations for which close at noon to-' morrow. Four nominations have already been received, viz., Miss Vera Shortt, nominated by the • Eastbourne Borough Council; Miss Gladys Russell, Football Club; Miss Mona Hull-Brown, combined. sports; and Mrs. Vida Jowett, Plunket Society. Further nominations are expected. At a meeting of the Executive Committee held on Wednesday evening arrangements were made for decorating the borough and the recreation ground, and permission was given to the various queens to holHl a number of entertainments. Mr. B. B. Witty has been appointed organiser for the event, and further information relating to the carnival may be obtained from him at the Ferry offices.
