AMERICAN DEMANDS
SENSATION AT LAUSANNE
RUSSIAN CLAIM ' ANALYSED.
(Received 7th December, 2 p.m.)
LAUSANNE, 6th December. (Mr. Child, the American Observer, caused a sensation at to-day's meeting of the Lausanne Conference by demanding the full freedom of the Straits for American merchantmen and warships, stating that the United States dosired to be able to send her ships anywhere in the world where her citizens were to be found.
Lord Curzori, who spoke first, analysed M. Tchitcherin's claim on behalf of Russia. _ He expressed the opinion that Russia was claiming a favoured position, and he appealed to the riparian Powers to say whether the Russian proposals could be regarded as a proper solution as affecting their, interests. If nobody were allowed access to the privileged zone, Russia would bo in a special position, converting the Black Sea into a Russian lake, with Turkey as a faithful guardian of the Straits.
