ENGLISH COAL CRISIS

WAGES BELOW COST OF LIVING

OWNERS BLAME BAIL CHARGES. [ (MOTKR'S TILBOUaC.) (Received sth October, 2 p.m.) LONDON, 4th October. A critical position has arisen, in the coal industry. On behalf of the miners, it is stated that their wages arc now 60 points below the coat of living. They suggest an addition of 3s a ton to the pithead price of coal, in order to secure a living wage. The owners declare that the men are generally not so badly off as is represented, and contend that the industry is not providing a eufficient revenue to pay increased wages. A farther reduction in railway transport charges is the only way to revive trade. The miners' executive is submitting proposals to the National Coal Board to meet the situation.
