FIGHTING IN SOUTH
ERSKINE CHILDERS AT
MACROOM,

LONDON, 21st September. Irregulars made strong efforts to recapture Macroom, but retired after four hours' fighting. Brskine Ohilders is said to have been the leader of the force, which opened fire with machine guns and rifles, but caused no casualties. Irregulars who were planning an ambush at Youghal were surprised by Nationals, who killed two and wounded several. An armoured car captured by Republicans and used in raids from the mountains of Mayo and Sligo was blown to pieces by Nationalist artillery.
