EARTH SUBSIDES
FROM BENEATH MAIN TRUNK
RAILWAY LINE.
(BT TBIBGRAPH.—PRESS ASSOCIATION.)
TAUMARUNUI, This Day. A subsidence'of earth from under the Main Trunk railway line between Wai-, niiha and Porootarao was" observed by surfacemen in time to avert a serious train smash. The men noticed that a portion of the embankment on -the left •of the line coming towards Taumarunui had fallen away, and investigations showed a subsidence of earth'from under the line, forming a huge cave extending thirty-five feet back to the hills on the other side of the line. There was a depth of only six feet of earth .under the rails, forming an arch six or seven feet wide. It is believed that the subsidence .was 'caused by recent _ earthquakes. The cavity under the line-was immediately packed with boulders, with very little delay-in the service.
