SOLDIER TENANTS.

The Supreme Court decision that the protection of soldier tenants from ejectment had been removed by last session's amendment of the law was a subject of a question by Mr. .G. Mitchell (Wellington South) in the House of Representatives yesterday. Mr. Mitchell asked if the Minister of Labour would make a statement as to the.Government's intentions.

The Hon. G. J. Anderson said that, when the matter was brought under his notice by a deputation from the R.S.A., he understood that the association in" tended to appeal against the decision. He did not know whether this.had yet been done. Whether the protection was of advantage to the-returned soldiers was open to question. He was informed that! numbers of people would not let ■' their houses to soldiers because of' the difficulty they would have in regaining possession. The case upon which the decision was made involved a shop, and it was not intended that the legislation should apply to shops. There might be some ichange in the law, hut what it would be had- not yet been decided. Mr. Mitchell: "In the meantime these men are being put out." The Minister replied that it was riot intended that this should be ■- allowed when the legislation was passed,, but it could not now be helped.. The soldiers .were in the same position as other mem- I hers of the community. j •-■'
