MARIST SUCCESSFUL AGAIN.

Although they withstood the rigour of a cold, howling gale, : the 200 or 300 people who witnessed the Marist-Old Boys match at Lyall Bay were treated to a pretty good display. Carmody was back with the Marist team, and Murphy resumed his old' position as" full-back. Although Old Boys were defeated by 1,8 points to1 nil,-they by no means disgraced themselves. Their forwards in both spells stuck to their task in manful fashion, and on many occasions they broke away from the Marist pack and charged down the field with ball at toe. The Marist defence, however, was > quick to check all these bursts, and the backs succeeded in turning the aggressive movements of their opponents. The wind, of course, was a deterrent factor against finished back play, but in spite of that: the Marist backs ;to6k a lot of liberties with the -ball, and brought off some really- fine' concerted play. ■ Old Boys, also, ware not backward in this form of play, and~theii- half rapidly put the men behind in motion. Marist's tackling, however, was too deadly on all occasions. Near the end of the first spell,' Marist forwards set: up a hot attack, and after a scramble close to theline, Conhop succeeded in working his way over. The wind would not allow Murphy to improve the score. ,In the second spoil the play was much brighter/and full of incident, one of the* outstanding features being ' Murphy's try and amazing kick in converting it. Murphy got the ball from just over the halfway line, punted downfieldl followed up, beat an opposing back for the leather, and, in company with Marist forwards, dribbled across tue line. Murphy scored near the corner. He took the kick himself in the teeth of the howling gale, and, allowing excellent windage, kicked, the gale carrying the ball at the ■right moment across the centre of the bar, 8-0. Undeterred, Old Boys attacked, but their efforts were without avail. There was another pretty piece of play on the part of Marist. Markham got the ball from a pass' : by M Cleary, made a splendid opening,' &nd then transferred to Mahoney, who beat a. couple of men and sent on to Tancred. Ins latter did his share and transferred again to' Mahoney, who got over near the.line. Murphy, added another goal 13-0.. Old Boys now took".a.-handsaw certainly played extremely well. The were playing .e&ually as well as

the Greens,' and they went careering down the field in great style. They had no luck, however, -and although they made many onslaughts^nothing canie of them. Just towards the finish Marist set up another warm attack, and Mahoney succeeded from a scramble in front of goal in forcing his way across. Murphy converted. 18-0. When the whistle sounded, Old Boys were attacking. Mr. E. Perry was referee. .
